[theqoo] IS IT KPOP IF THERE'S NO KOREAN MEMBER?

After seeing people arguing over the making of Niziu (T/N: JYP's Japanese K-pop group, I got reminded of the boy group EXP Edition. The members are all from New York and there's not even a Korean American. There is also no input from any entertainment company.

Well, in fact, it's hard to see that this group had any commercial success. The image of them being an experimental group is also strong but this group brings some interesting implications to Kpop.

Kpop is increasing in popularity around the world and the size of the people wanting to consume Kpop is also increasing. Some of these people will definitely want to become Kpop artists. The group above has been created by the participation of such people. And as Kpop's popularity increases, people like them who are participating in such attempts will also increase. Nizi Project is also trying for the same thing.

If so, should the Korean cultural community be tolerant towards such attempts or take a more exclusive position?

1. ? But then what is the Kpop genre? Can you put IU, AKMU, BP, EXO, BTS, Soshi, Shinee, etc. all together in one song? I'm not talking about them singing in Korean but what's the standard for defining a "genre"?

2. If you think about what separates Kpop, Cpop and Jpop, you'll get your answer right way. Why are there so many people who are confused? I think that Kpop can accommodate to a wider range of alternatives but there are other genres than Kpop in this world

3. If it's a group of Japanese singing in Japanese, then it's Jpop

4. Wasn't there a boy group who debuted in Korea made of foreigners before? I think that they failed.

5. This is what I feel after reading the post below but I think that people's point of view are different. Some people think that the Kpop mood is more important while others think that the language and nationality are more important

6. If they sing in Korean, then it's Kpop

7. The issue is whether you see Kpop as a genre and whether you look at the language. It's because some people don't agree that Kpop is its own genre. So only looking at someone's language and nationality isn't completely wrong either.

8. I think that Kpop is its own genre

9. Nationality 100% plays a role. If a Korean singer puts out an English album, does it automatically make it pop?

10. I'm not sure if they sing in Korean but if it's all English, then it's hard to call it Kpop.
