[theqoo] IS IT KPOP IF THERE'S NO KOREAN MEMBER?

After seeing people arguing over the making of Niziu (T/N: JYP's Japanese K-pop group, I got reminded of the boy group EXP Edition. The members are all from New York and there's not even a Korean American. There is also no input from any entertainment company.

Well, in fact, it's hard to see that this group had any commercial success. The image of them being an experimental group is also strong but this group brings some interesting implications to Kpop.

Kpop is increasing in popularity around the world and the size of the people wanting to consume Kpop is also increasing. Some of these people will definitely want to become Kpop artists. The group above has been created by the participation of such people. And as Kpop's popularity increases, people like them who are participating in such attempts will also increase. Nizi Project is also trying for the same thing.

If so, should the Korean cultural community be tolerant towards such attempts or take a more exclusive position?

1. ? But then what is the Kpop genre? Can you put IU, AKMU, BP, EXO, BTS, Soshi, Shinee, etc. all together in one song? I'm not talking about them singing in Korean but what's the standard for defining a "genre"?

2. If you think about what separates Kpop, Cpop and Jpop, you'll get your answer right way. Why are there so many people who are confused? I think that Kpop can accommodate to a wider range of alternatives but there are other genres than Kpop in this world
