North Korea's North Korean news site, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on the 23rd (local time) that North Korea sentenced middle school students (high school in South Korea) to heavy sentences for secretly watching 'Squid Game'.
In a report citing an insider from North Korea, RFA said, "Early last week, seven high school students from Chongjin City, North Hamgyong Province were caught watching 'Squid Game' [...]. The resident who brought in and sold the show (from China) was shot, the students who bought and watched it were sentenced to life imprisonment, and the rest of the students who simply watched it were sentenced to five years of reform through labor.”
“The friend told several other students, who became interested, and they shared the flash drive with them. They were caught by the censors in 109 Sangmu, who had received a tipoff,” said the source, referring to the government strike force that specializes in catching illegal video watchers, known officially as Surveillance Bureau Group 109.
The arrest of the seven students marks the first time that the government is applying the newly passed law on the “Elimination of Reactionary Thought and Culture,” in a case involving minors, according to the source.
The source also added, "The principal, youth secretary, and homeroom teacher of the high school to which the students belong were dismissed and expelled from the party membership list.
